LIVING GREEN WALLS 101: WHAT, WHY AND HOW?

A living green wall is a wall surface that is designed and covered with greenery. It offers architects and consultants to provide a cost effective solution by turning monotonous walls into aesthetically pleasing living vertical gardens.  In addition to the breath-taking scenery, green walls have many other benefits that make them an obvious choice.

Diversity is the key here and by utilizing a broad spectrum of plant species, we can obtain intricate patterns and unique designs with a multitude of colors, textures and sizes that nature provides. All living green walls must include a growing medium like soil, water or a substrate and require an integrated irrigation system to maintain the growth of the foliage or types of plants. Here are a few benefits of having green walls:

Reduces the ambient temperature:

When used outdoors, they provide a durable solution or act as a heat-absorbing medium to reduce cooling load consumption for buildings; for example, it protects the building from harmful effects of sunlight and UV exposure and acts as an insulation barrier against noise and extreme temperature that is ideal in most cities like Dubai, U.A.E.

Purifies the air:

When used indoors, they help improve air quality not only because the plants remove carbon dioxide and replace it with oxygen-rich air, but also because plants can filter the air around them by absorbing and cleaning pollutants.

No concerns for maintenance:

All thanks to our maintenance contract, you need not worry about maintaining your green walls. We take of our plants and ensure that they remain lush and green all year round.

Types of systems and technical information:

There are two main systems of green wall design, one is modular based system and the other is planter based.

The modular system includes planting boxes, each with a planting media bag. Planting media support brackets with covers, anti-lift arms and automated drip irrigation-cum-fertilization (fertigation) and anchoring pilaster systems. Vertical garden model green walls use UV-stabilized plastic modules and SS304/SS316 stainless steel support brackets and pilasters. Elmich VGM is one of our main supplier for Green walls and is certified by the independent international test authority. They are guaranteed to withstand winds uplift from various directions at 110km/hr with no noticeable damage.

The second system is planter based easy to install, low maintenance greening system with a choice of mounting, planting density and growth media options to suit different wall conditions. Depending on the plant size and planting density our green wall trays allow planting spacing’s of 200mm and 250mm horizontally and 150mm and 225mm vertically. The trays can be individually replaced or removed for wall maintenance or design change. Each tray has a water reservoir with a cover designed for the provision of a capillary which re-use stored water and facilitate sustainable plant growth.

The use of mounting frames minimizes wall penetrations and enables installation to be carried out easily and safely by a single person. The trays and mounting panels are manufactured from UV-stabilized recycled polypropylene that meets the requirements for international “Green building certification.

The two systems above have their benefits and drawbacks for each unique application scope, so the following points will provide most architects/consultants/clients a few key factors to take into consideration when selecting the type of Green wall required are:

  1. Type of structure used for support
  2. Area of green wall and irrigation source
  3. Facing direct sunlight
  4. Types of plants used
  5. Cost of maintenance
  6. Intricacy of design
  7. Interior or exterior use
  8. Life expectancy or durability of the plants
  9. Ambient temperature changes through the surface of the green (from top to bottom)
  10. Feasibility of replacement of plants
